BSC again named a “Best College Value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance

BSC again named a “Best College Value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance

For Immediate Release
Jan. 2, 2018

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine has ranked Birmingham-Southern College among the top 100 Liberal Arts Colleges for 2018 on its annual list, which is based on quality and affordability.

BSC is also included in the magazine’s “300 Best College Values for 2018,” which includes public schools, private universities, and private liberal arts colleges. Kiplinger’s said the selected schools exemplify the attributes parents and students look for when sorting through college choices: small class size, a good first-year retention rate, and a high four-year graduation rate.

“Students and parents are looking for a top-notch education that’s affordable and that offers a well-rounded experience to help students reach their full academic and social potential,” said Sara Newhouse, vice president for admission and financial planning at BSC. “This recognition follows on the heels of the college’s tuition rest, which was designed to offer a more transparent system of pricing. We’re proud to again be listed as a Kiplinger Best Value.”

Kiplinger’s quality measures, which are weighted more heavily than cost, include each school’s admission rate, percentage of students who return for sophomore year, student-faculty ratio, and four-year graduation rate. On the cost side, Kiplinger’s measures sticker price, financial aid, and average debt at graduation.

“We start with a universe of nearly 1,200 schools and trim the list using measures of academic quality,” said Mark Solheim, editor of Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine. “We then rank the schools based on cost and financial aid data. All 300 schools on our list are worth a look.”

The rankings will appear in the magazine’s February issue, which will be on newsstands Jan. 9. They are now available online at kiplinger.com/links/colleges.
